with a disastrous rollout of the obama care website. the president apparently was totally unaway of that with the major problems with that until a few days after the launch. a major disturbance over the weekend, as you know. what can you tell us about this part of the story? >> the health and human services folks are saying that that data services hub at terremark, that is a subsidiary of verizon, that data services hub provides some of the capabilities to the website, that that data services hub is back up and running again. and they are continuing to work on the larger issues with the obama care website and that is all of the millions of people trying to get in there and file applications and get enrolled for coverage. meanwhile, wolf, a coming issue on the horizon. people who are starting to get notices letting them know that the insurance plans they have now are being cancelled or canceled or modified and that their rates are going up. people are starting to complain about this. the white house is starting to respond by saying, yes, this is going to happen because of the new
. you have called the issues with the obama care website a, quote, practical reality check on president obama's ambitions. what do you mean by that? >> i mean the -- the centerpiece of the liberal enterprise as portrayed by obama, he is a very ideologically ambitious president. and he sees himself as sort of the anti-ronald reagan. beginning a new kind of liberalism and adding, you know, the most important element of social democratic governance which is health care. and that has been his objective. this would be his legacy. if he can't get the thing to work, and it collapses, i think it will jeopardize liberal enterprise, expansion of the welfare state for a generation to come. what we heard today, the interview that you just had, with that lady in chicago, is even worse. it isn't just technical issues. it is the fact that the government, as we heard, mass decided if you have your insurance and you like it, the government will decide that it is junk. the government will decide you have no idea how to decide on your own what you ought to do. a kind of crushing paternalism which i think
something out, dana, i spent -- okay, this obama care website goes down. it crashed on sunday. i went back on today. i got another error. there's my error message. i got that one today. when i got back on, i started to renew the process i started on friday. 40 minutes. i got two steps out of a five-step process to enroll. i didn't get near to enrolling. there is no way, there is no way they're going to fix this system any time soon. it's not going to be two or three weeks. it's going to be months. by the way, who's fixing it? who's paying for that fix? it should be the same people who came up with this garbage system. >> but there's no chance they're going to fix it. they have to scrap all of the code in its entirety. you can't just apply bad code on -- >> i'm sure everybody sat up there, said, let's figure out a way to screw people as badly as we can -- >> -- say, listen -- >> if you listen to the head of the insurance in florida, they said they'll offer a lot of plans and they're going to be cheaper for a lot of people. blue cross blue shield of florida -- >> what you're telling me, blue
to the massive problems with the obama website. the obama administration will now allow individuals extra time to sign up for insurance plans. ko im is live with the story. what's the deadline now. >> reporter: good morning. the deadline is now march 31 but with that extra time comes some extra questions and there are calls to extend that deadline. now that's been done, there are some concerns about some new penalties that may be associated with the extension. you see, insurance coverage usually starts at the beginning of the month so if by the original deadline you had signed up by march 15, then you would not get coverage till april 1 which would mean that you would be breaking the law. so now you have some extra time, an extra six weeks. when you file your taxes for next year, you don't need to fill out a waiver. a guidance was released last night saying you don't need to claim that exemption. the health and human services saying, quote,, the administration has determined it would be unfair to require individuals to make penalty payments. the penalty would be starting at $95 per person just
in this debacle that has been the obama care website rollout. have a listen to how it went. >> despite our democrats opposition to part d ten years ago, we committed to making the best of the program. and because of all the changes that have occurred in part d prescription program, 90% of seniors right now the are satisfied. and why are they satisfied? well, are in my district, before that was vote, i made seniors know that i was going to vote no and opposed and i told them two reasons. the gap, the doughnut hole when you're paying for premiums you're not getting any benefits. that was horrendous and number two, no one was an outside source was not sitting down and being the third party to the negotiate the prices of prescription drugs. so it lost. we lost the policy fight. and what did we do? we went back to our districts and we told our seniors although we voted no, we're -- we personally believe and we'll work with the bush administration to make it work. that's what we did. and how many of you stood up to do that? none. zero. zero. let's talk. let's not water the wine here. let's say i
's been four weeks to the day. i imagine the white house seems longer since obama care and the website was launched and then promptly crashed. next hour, that debacle faces blistering criticism on capitol hill. that as a federal administrator has to explain her agency's failures in creating that website. testifying today. and of course today's hearing an sets the stage for her boss, health and human services secretary kathleen seb beaelius faces a grilling from lawmakers tomorrow. there is a new shocker now hitting home for millions of americans. many may lose their private insurance coverage that they have now. let's get the very latest from senior white house correspondent brianna keilar. this has got to be going against what many heard the president say, which is they wouldn't lose. >> reporter: the white house now admitting that some people will see their health plans change. that does go against what we heard president obama promise. the white house is also saying it might not actually be or it will not actually be a bad thing for many people. one of the president's longtime promi
're over the website. >> the problem with obama care isn't just the website, it's the whole law. >> the bottom line is the problems with obama care run deeper than just the website. >> the problems go well beyond a flopped website. >> it is clear obama care and flaws are much more than the website. the website is the tip of the iceberg. >> this week republicans smelled blood in president obama's claim no americans would be kicked off their existing plans. >> let me repeat this. nothing in our plan requires you to change what you have. >> and yet as nbc reports a detailed look at the legislation shows that the administration knew that more than 40 to 67% of those in the individual market, or some percentage of 14 million americans, would not be able to keep their existing plans. never mind the fact the new plans will offer more comprehensive coverage and sometimes at a lower price tag, this is clearly the next front in a war on the nation's health care law. >> we know this morning is the president knew that these letters were coming. in the president knew these letters were comin
comprehensive coverage but at what the cost? the head of the agency in charge of creating the obama care website was asked about that at a congressional hearing today. >> this man wrote me and said, my wife has been recently informed by her insurance carrier that her health care policy does not comply with the affordable care act. now we must purchase a new policy to get the aim coverage at an 18% increase in our premium. so what happened to the if you like your insurance, you can keep it. >> what i would tell that individual is if their carrier is telling them they're changing the plan and offering an increase, that they would need to go take a look what's available in their state and in their market. which is certainly something that's available to them through the exchanging >> yeah, at an 1% increase. >> joe johns has been digging into this for us. did the white house knowingly or perhaps not knowingly mislead the american public when the president so often said if you like your health plan, you can keep your health plan? foo if you look at some of these statements they do appear to have mad
'm not excusing obama care -- obama for this website debacle. but at the same time, the more we enroll people in the insurance, the price will go down. so it's not sticker shock. and we've got to get the website fixed so we can enroll more people. >> now, the affordable care act has standards that we haven't seen before. it's going to weed out the junk insurance. i want to know, what's your reaction as a doctor to that? what does that mean to you, the provider? >> well, i'm really upset about it. because the issue is 90% of americans never read their insurance policy. so they don't really know they don't have maternity care or they don't have prescription drug coverage until they get pregnant, and need some medicine, okay? so the issue is -- think about it like car insurance. if you have a rolls-royce, you can't have honda coverage. you have to have rolls-royce coverage. same thing with insurance for your body. you cannot just walk around with no insurance, because if you do, and you get sick, then everybody else has to pay for it. sounds very republican, right? nobody wants to pay for people
